When the Deck Defaults to Social, Show the Home Screen

Share

The planning deck opened on social again. I pulled the home screen.

Search, video, maps, mail, and commerce still own the daily opens while social time slips. That is the attention map. It is not a validation workflow. It is not a search-bar merchandising brief.

EMARKETER's Peter Clark published the Alphabet Soup chart on September 16, 2026. Key stat: Google owns six of the 15 most-visited US smartphone apps, led by YouTube at 176.7 million unique visitors and 75% reach, per July Comscore data.

Social media apps' share of time spent on mobile phones fell to 41.4% in July, down 5.1 percentage points from April. EMARKETER called it the steepest three-month drop since Apptopia began tracking in 2023. Google AI Mode now reaches 1 billion monthly users.

Those are EMARKETER's numbers. I am not inventing a client reach board on top.

So what for multilocation media planning. When the room defaults to social as the whole mobile story, you plan against yesterday's time-share and miss where attention still sits. The fire is not "social is dead." The fire is a deck that treats social as the only home-screen truth.

I have sat through enough media reviews to know the cost of a lazy default. You overfund the channel that felt culturally loud last quarter. You underfund the apps people open before they scroll. Then you wonder why brand consideration stayed flat while social CPMs climbed.

EMARKETER's own use note matches how I brief rooms: drop the chart when the conversation defaults to social. Show leadership where attention actually sits across search, video, mail, maps, and commerce. Benchmark your own app's reach against the 15 apps customers open every day.

So what again. The emotional outcome is whether a location owner trusts your plan as a map of real opens, or as a fashion report. Home-screen evidence buys trust. Social-only folklore burns it.

So what a third time. Misallocated opens become misallocated dollars. A social-default plan spends against folklore while habit apps keep the phone.

AI Mode at 1 billion monthly users is the same distribution muscle moving into AI, not a reason to abandon the apps that already own the phone. Google is extending the home-screen advantage into the assistant layer. Plan for that overlap. Do not pretend social time-share is the whole phone.

Cost of inaction is concrete. Keep letting the deck default to social and you will cut the inventory that still owns daily habit. The competitor who funds YouTube, search adjacency, and maps-aware creative while social cools will own the week you spent arguing about a feed.

Every sales conversation comes down to one thing: trust. If your prospect trusts you, they buy. If they do not, fear wins and the deal dies. A plan that ignores the home screen fails that test in one Comscore slide.

Keep it simple. Define your customers. Define your solutions. Trust the data you can stand on. The data is 176.7 million YouTube uniques, 75% reach, six Google apps in the top 15, and social time at 41.4% after a sharp three-month drop.

On my side of the table I still have to defend the mix to people who live in social apps at work. I show them the home screen. Then we talk.

If a board still wants social first, answer with opens, not vibes. Six Google apps in the top 15 is not a brand story. It is a daily habit map. Fund the habit.

Bring this into the Evolved Pros community this week. What share of your last mobile plan sat on social by default. Which of the 15 most-visited apps your customers open did you fund. When you next open a planning deck, how do you put the home screen on slide one before social owns the room.

The Bottom Line

When the deck defaults to social, show the home screen. EMARKETER Chart September 16, 2026: Google owns six of the 15 most-visited US smartphone apps. YouTube hit 176.7 million unique visitors and 75% reach in July Comscore. Social share of mobile time fell to 41.4%, down 5.1 points from April. AI Mode sits at 1 billion monthly users.

If the week produced another social-first plan and a quieter open rate on the apps people actually live in, you planned the feed and missed the phone.
